Henbury Fun Day

Henbury Fun Day

It was a family affair at Henbury Fun Day as Charlotte Leslie supported her mother Jane who set off and returned from Henbury on a 30-mile sponsored bike ride around Bristol to raise money for Henbury Youth Community Street Dance.

They were joined by Kulveer Ranger, the man who set up the Oyster card system in London, who set Jane off on her way and alongside Charlotte and local residents welcomed her back to Henbury.

60-year-old Jane Leslie, European champion triathlete in her age group, hopes to raise £2,000 for Henbury Youth Community Street Dance, which was set up by Charlotte at the Emmanuel Chapel in Henbury. Jane regularly takes part in the street dance classes along other dancers less than a third of her age.

Nine weeks after the formation of the classes, the young people put on a tremendous street dance routine for family and friends. Jane, from Easter Compton, sees the classes as a brilliant way to foster community spirit in Henbury and wanted to show her support for the group by taking part in the sponsored bike ride.

Jane said: “As many people are aware, there is a lot of street crime and youth problems in the Henbury area, and these dance classes have proved to be extremely successful in getting some of the children off the streets engaging in a challenging physical pastime as well as building community spirit.”

Charlotte added: “It’s really fantastic to see the Henbury Youth Community Street Dance project which started at the beginning of the year, really taking off. “I worked with Paul Thompson from Emmanuel Chapel to set these classes up and have seen first hand the difference it has made for young people.

“I am delighted that my mum has taken the initiative to get out there and raise some money so that these classes can continue well into the future.”

Henbury Youth Community Street Dance is in the running for a £4,000 grant under an Inspire funding website – www.bs10youridea.com. You can vote for it under Get Creative.
