Protecting green space and community amenities

Marching against post office closures

Marching against post office closures

Whether it is the local swimming pool, post office, pub or park – our community amenities are vitally important to the way we live our lives. In recent years, communities have lost so much; Shirehampton’s swimming pool,  playgrounds,  post offices across the city – the list goes on.

These institutions may not always look important to the planners and bureaucrats, but getting rid of them undermines the very fabric of the community, and that in turn leads to its own problems:  Whether it is isolation and loneliness of the elderly, or antisocial behaviour and crime amongst bored young people. The economic and human cost of wiping out the keystones of our communities is dear.

Getting rid of a community facility can happen in a day, but it cannot easily be reversed: All too often, once it is gone, it is gone. Charlotte believes that the route to solving social and economic issues such as antisocial behaviour, crime, obesity, isolation or loneliness does not lie in wiping out our community institutions and facilities, but taking a pride in them, and improving them.
