Charlotte Leslie selected to address national conference on ‘New Politics’

She also set out the necessity to reset the balance of power between the political class and the public, and described basic ways in which we can enable communities to hold their elected representatives to account.

Speaking after the conference, Charlotte Leslie said:

“If the last few months of campaigning through the expenses fiasco has taught anything, it’s that when it comes to regaining the public’s trust, the currency of words is pretty much dead. People have heard so many promises, and so many words over the last decade that standing and talking away on a doorstep does not carry the weight that once it might.

But I’ve also found that there is one thing that’s good for breaking through that wall of public distrust – action. Simply doing things to serve people, that has tangible , lasting benefits to the community. After the age of ‘Promise-Politics’, the only way to rebuild trust is – on every political level – to roll your sleeves up and get on with it .”
