A major new initiative is about to be launched in Lockleaze, using boxing to get youngsters off the streets and out of crime. With the help of Conservative Candidate and keen boxer Charlotte Leslie (Bristol North West), Dave Jeal, the chaplain at Ashfield Young Offenders Institute, is hoping to set up a boxing club to reach out to disaffected youngsters.
Inspired by the work of Dennis Stinchcombe MBE from Bristol Broadplain Boxing club in Easton, Dave Jeal and Charlotte Leslie met Dennis to discuss their plans. After a tour of the gym, and a sparring session for Charlotte, Broadplain has kindly offered to help get the Lockleaze boxing initiative off the ground with advice and support.
“What I’ve seen here is truly inspiring,” said a delighted Mr Jeal. “This is exactly the kind of project that I’m hoping to set up in Lockleaze. There is a lot to be done, but thanks to Broadplain’s support, I’m really looking forward to working to getting things up and running.”
“Boxing is a brilliant way to inspire discipline and respect,” said Dennis. “Every night our centre is full with kids who want to learn. At the same time we’re keeping them healthy, and off the streets and away from the dangers of drugs and crime.”
And for Charlotte, the visit was a chance to get back to a sport that helped her through her school days. “I was lucky enough to have parents who took me to a boxing gym after school so I could let off steam. Lots of young people feel there is nothing out there for them to do. It’s my mission to make sure that every young person has the opportunity I enjoyed to get fit, learn discipline and build self-esteem in a properly supervised environment. That way, they can get their kicks in the gym, and not by causing trouble on our streets.”
